Who's the fairest of them allPoor Frank, but perhaps there is one thing the two of them have in common…the love of coffee!

I admit, it’s my weakness. I can’t start the day at work without one. Even though I would like to think of myself as a coffee connoisseur, my coffee of choice shows that my palette is one of an amateur – café latte. But perhaps I shouldn’t feel too bad as I recall the man who came into my favourite coffee haunt the other day and ordered a double double espresso (no, you are not seeing double, it was his coffee that was). Noticing the look of surprise on the barista’s face, he obviously felt the need to explain. Apparently it was only the second time he had ordered one – Oh, I get it, that makes it OK… I guess.

Wiki, has an amazing list of over 53 coffee types, including some you may not be that familiar with, such as:

  • Guillermo: One or two shots of hot espresso, poured over slices of lime (sounds terrible)
  • Café bombón: Espresso with condensed milk, popular in Spain (I’ve tried similar in Vietnam and I must admit, a bit too sweet for me)
  • Caffe Zoro: Double espresso  added to hot water with a 1:1 ratio (I liked the sound of the name)
  • Greek frappé: Originating in Greece in the early 1950’s, it is a foam-covered iced coffee drink made from spray-dried instant coffee.
  • Red Tie: A traditional Thai iced tea, comprising of a single shot of espresso and a spicy and sweet mixture of chilled black tea, orange blossom water, star anise, crushed tamarind, sugar and condensed milk or cream (Umm, what can I say? I think I would need to try it before passing judgement)

So what’s your brew of choice? Ever tried an unusual one?

A lot of people on all sides of my family like coffee… but I don’t really. I don’t hate it… but I rarely drink it. Sometimes at those places (like IHOP) where you can get it for free, or as part of a free breakfast at a hotel… then I’ll drink it… but I have to load it up with sugar and cream.

I’m more of a tea person. I like hot or cold, though I prefer cold. With cold I mostly just load it up with sugar… with hot, I like lemon and honey… maybe some cream but not much.

    I also like hot chocolate.

    Just not so much coffee.

Maybe you didn’t inherit the coffee gene. Tea is pretty good – love a green tea with asian food.

I think I like all types of hot drinks – tea, hot chocolate with marshmallows – I even drink hot water… but coffee, now that’s definitely in my top 3 list of beverages.

My parents also liked hot cider… like apple cider hot with added caramel for example. I tried it, it wasn’t bad… my problem with that was even though I love apples, I’m not fond of apple cider!

Hot chocolate with whipped cream is even better than marshmallows… I’ve taken to doing that. There are some varied flavors of hot chocolate now too, like mint or caramel, that I like.

I never drink coffee. I’ve tried it twice and couldn’t keep it down. But I love tea, particularly black tea so I can get some caffeine. And though I should give them up, I still like a diet cola now and then.

Living in Singapore is a whole new coffee experience. Kopi C with Carnation milk, Kopi O with Sweetened Condensed milk, coffee and tea in the same cup…. The coffee beans are actually roasted in butter which changes the taste as well, You can actually manage to order drink that exceeds your daily caffine, sugar and fat allowances. Its brilliant!

Sounds amazing. I bet you they didn’t teach you that in the coffee course you took – but nothing beats practical over theory in this case. 🙂

Living in Murcia, Spain, for a while, I became very fond of a morning ‘Carajillo’ after my breakfast at a local bar. Similar to a ‘Café bombón but with a shot of brandy.

I’m allergic to caffeine so I don’t touch the stuff! One of my funniest teaching experiences was when I was giving an 8am Friday First year biology lecture. I am a very chirpy morning person and don’t have any problem with a lecture at that time but as you can imagine, quite a few of the students disagreed with me on that. I was giving a lecture on the immune system and explaining that allergies are an example of when the immune system gets it wrong. I talked briefly about my caffeine allergy and one of the students yelled out really loudly from the very back of the 600-seat lecture theatre: ‘What the hell are you on then….. speed?’ The whole room erupted into laughter!!

Meanwhile, my blog post on the health benefits of coffee continues to be one of my most read posts and still holds the records for most views in one day!

I’m not a morning person and without my morning coffee I’m worse. Sounds like you have a great bunch of students – hecklers and all.

I never knew you could be allergic to caffeine. I hope it isn’t something that can hit you at anytime during your life – I wouldn’t want that short straw
