Dog tastes drumstick for first time

Ah, too obvious! Of course it would have to be chicken.

So why does meat often taste like chicken?…Well maybe it doesn’t. Our friends at MythBusters did a taste test of different meats to see if  ‘it is easy to confuse the taste of unusual meats with that of chicken.’ They had twenty meats prepared for tasting (if you’re a vegetarian, or animal lover, skip this paragraph and read the results in the following paragraph), including: frog, peacock, squab, alligator, goat and turtle (What the…!) For the non squeamish, check out there video here.

Tory got 17 out of 20 samples correct and Grant only 11. The giveaway for Tory was the texture of the meat, so they did the test again; this time with minced meat to take away the texture. The results improved with Tory identifying 18 of 20 and Grant 19 of 20. In the words of MythBusters – Busted.

I was once tricked with goat for lamb (not happy, goat is a no go zone for me), but never chicken.

Have you ever confused another meat for chicken?

I’m not an adventurous meat eater, so no. I only do chicken or pork. No red meat or anything more exotic. But when I was young, my mom served us beef tongue, because it was cheap. She told us it was hamburger, but I saw through that on the first bite. Gross, gross, gross!

Beef tongue – yuck. It’s meat like this that makes me think going vegetarian would be easy – mushroom burger would have gone down better

My mother decided to try lamb at one point when I was a kid… not sure why… it wasn’t horrible, but it had a taste definitely different than beef. Fortunately that trial didn’t last long.

I like beef, I like chicken more. I also like bacon, ham, and pork chops. I don’t really branch out beyond that in the meat area. I’m perfectly happy with my menu options as they are, so no need to venture out into other areas… I’m also perfectly happy with lots of vegetables and fruits… and of course some grains and starches.

I especially don’t like cuts of meat that still look like a part of the animal that it came from… If I had to kill and clean it myself, I’d be full-on vegetarian.

It’s interesting what you say about lamb – here in Australia, it’s very common – it’s up there with beef, chicken and pork. I must admit, it has a much stronger taste than beef, so understand why people find it a bit confronting first time they have it, not to mention that one can’t help but think of Mary and her cute cuddly little lamb. And as for “I especially don’t like cuts of meat that still look like a part of the animal that it came from”, I hear you. Going vegetarian would be easy if I had to actually kill the animal myself.

It is hard for me to remember exactly… since it has been SOOOO long… but I think I remember lamb having maybe a bit of a bitter taste to it, at least as compared to beef. I don’t remember the texture being different, but the taste was easy to tell the difference.

  • The most exotic thing I have eaten is frog legs and it did taste like chicken. (I didn’t ask for seconds.)

    • Marti says:

Wow, you’re far more adventurous than me. I think I have never ordered frogs legs after I was subjected to frog direction in year 9. I couldn’t go through with it and was excused to sit in the corridor along with some other weak stomached individuals.

I don’t know what a cat taste like but I can tell you what dog taste like, I actually cannot remember. Coming from the Philippines, we eat all kinds of meat and I won’t tell what they are. It might gross out the readers. Ostrich, horse, gator, snake. Oh snake, taste like chicken coz that’s what they eat. 😛

” Oh snake, taste like chicken coz that’s what they eat.” – LOL, I like the logic.
PS. I really enjoy your comments, you never cease to amaze me Seeker with the snippets of your life and experiences that you share. I think I would enjoy a long and lazy Sunday afternoon with you drinking red wine and nibbling on a cheese platter, and it would feel as if I had known you for ages. 🙂
