The selfie

By That's life

Cell phone selfie

It’s a bit like the selfie stick for mobile phones

So, tell me… do you own a selfie stick? I do… I’ve never used it. It was one of those delightful gifts they sell at Mother’s day stalls in primary school. My daughter thought it was exactly what I needed. Back in my primary school days, I too was convinced of the delightful gifts on offer for mothers. It makes me wonder if my Mum loved all those tea towels I used to buy her. On reflection, she probably loved them as much as my Dad loved his handkerchief Father’s Day gifts.

So, what delightful presents have you given or received?

Double double toil and trouble

Witch

Not quite the potion of the witches from Macbeth, but surely just as evil?

As a child I was rather surprisingly taken by the famous witches poem from Macbeth; so much so that I learnt it off by heart at the age of ten. I guess I liked the idea of witches, gruesome ingredients and evil potions. If I could make a potion, I think it would be a truth serum. Yes, not that imaginative, but for some spark, I’d infiltrate the office air conditioning system and watch the fun begin. Evil, aren’t I?

If you could whip up a potion (good or bad), what would it be?

Remember Eleanor Rigby?

Eleanor rigby

Eleanor Rigby is probably my favourite Beatles song. I remember listening to the quirky words as a child and picturing the whole story unfold in my imagination.

Sheet music lesson #1

Music

Normally I find Wiki a quick way to learn about something that I have no idea about (at least as a starting point). But this time I was presented with the opposite; having played the clarinet for 5 years I knew what B flat was. However, Wiki’s definition challenged my modest brain matter.

B (B-flat; also called si bémol) is the eleventh semitone of the Western chromatic scale (starting from C). It lies a diatonic semitone above A and a chromatic semitone below B, thus being enharmonic to A although in some musical tunings, B will have a different sounding pitch than A.

The office cuckoo

Frank and the office cuckoo

Two cuckoo facts that you mightn’t know

  • Not all cuckoos are brood parasites (organism that relies on others to raise their offspring), the majority of cuckoos actually raise their young themselves
  • The roadrunner, one of my favourite cartoons, is a fast running ground cuckoo

Cold and frog in throat

I love colourful phrases as they can be so visual in nature. The expression has only been around since the late 1800’s. It was made common place when an 1894 throat lozenges advertising campaign made the claim that “The Taylor Bros. say that ‘Frog in the Throat’ will cure hoarseness. 10 cents and box.”

Memory of a goldfish?

Hyperthymesia

Thanks to Jen Martin of Espresso Science, I found new material for this week’s cartoon. Hyperthymesia, is the condition of possessing a superior autobiographical memory and is derived from the Greek, hyper, meaning excessive and thymesis, meaning remembering. Individuals are able to recall the vast majority of personal experiences and events in their life such as what day Easter Sunday fell on and what they wore and did on that particular day.

So, on the topic of memory,

Can you guess which occupation would have the hardest [memory] test in the world?

I would have guessed astronaut. What would you guess?

PS. The answer is in her most recent post What memories are made.
