does sound travel through water? At last, Frank wins…

OK, before I get bombarded with emails informing me of my acoustical error, let me acknowledge that yes, I do realise that sound does travel through water. I think from a cartooning perspective, that anything goes and at least Frank has used his boss’s lack of knowledge to his advantage for once.

In fairness to the depicted scene, sound will have difficulty in reaching Frank as it is travelling through air before it reaches the water, so there is an element of reflection and absorption that occurs when the sound waves hit the liquid.

But did you realise that sound travels fastest through a solid (about 6000 m/sec) when compared with liquid (1480 m/s) and air (332 m/s)?  This is so because the molecules are packed tighter together in a solid, than a liquid or gas and allows for a more effective transmission of sound.

Relaunch of Cosmic Caboodle

By Website announcements

We’re now bigger, bolder and betterCosmic Caboodle home page

For those of you who have followed my writing journey so far, you will be familiar with Cosmic Caboodle. It innocently started off as a book, How to make an Alien, and resulted in an spin off called Cosmic Caboodle (which was an integral part of the book’s plot).

Basically, Cosmic Caboodle is an Earth based online store (free!) which provides visitors with access to the wonders of the universe by allowing them to have their very own piece of the galaxy. Black holes, a rock from the moon or gravel from Mars. You name it, if the universe has it, then Cosmic Caboodle is all about bringing it to the comforts of your very own home.

Sounds awesome… I really want a black hole. What next?

Simple, you click the product (e.g.: black hole, planet, star) of your choice and Cosmic Caboodle will download it via your computer. You’ll end up with a user friendly pdf which you print to make your very own piece of the universe.

Cosmic Caboodle is about bringing the wonders of science and space to kids and inspiring them to learn more about the universe in which we live in. The universe is brought to life via DIY projects that allow you to interact and explore. A splash of alien fun, allows me to bring colour and life to visitors of the site. (I also, get to draw more aliens, my favourite type of character).

So, if you’re a bit curious, please visit Cosmic Caboodle. Better still, tell a friend or family member who has inquisitive children. It will keep the kids occupied and the parents free to sit down for 10 minutes to a cup of tea or coffee. To get started, subscribe and receive your very own eShowbag of universal fun.

Martians are from Mars

By Space and Aliens

Martians are aliens from Mars

You know, it’s hard to be the first in anything these days. There I was, creating this simple cartoon on aliens, thinking I might possibly have been the first person to name a alien within our solar system, aside from the famous Martian. Google sorted me out in less than 0.35 seconds and provided me with 1,890,000 results for my alien query.

Google has spoken, below are the official names of aliens within our solar system

  • Mercurians are from Mercury
  • Venusians are from Venus (Personally, I think Venetians are funnier)
  • Jovians are from Jupiter
  • Saturnians are from Saturn
  • Uranians are from Uranus (it’s also a 19th century term that referred to a person of a third sex)
  • Neptunians are from Neptune
  • Poor Pluto misses out, after having been downgraded from planet to dwarf planet. Maybe aliens only live on planets.

Have you been the first in anything?

When the boss makes you work through the rain

Well, you might think what an absurd invention, but there are other takes on the humble umbrella.

Check out patent USD324117 below with its unique patent claim of ‘the ornamental design for a dog umbrella, as shown and described. FIG. 1 is a perspective view of a dog umbrella showing my new design, it being understood that the broken lines are for illustrative purposes only and form no part of the claimed design’

So what do you think? Is your pampered pooch in need of one of these?

Let me pick your brain

By That's life

pick your brain literally

When I typed ‘pick your brain’ in Google I was rather surprised to see the number of articles giving advise on how to avoid having your brain picked. Personally, I don’t find it that painful and am typically happy to share my thoughts with people. But perhaps if the pickings were more frequent, I might begin to have negative feelings about the cranial exploration.

Do you mind having your brain picked?

Gym workout

Weight vs mirror workout

It always amuses me, to spy on unsuspecting people at the gym who are more focussed on viewing their muscles in the mirror, than they are on actually getting a good workout. The other fun one, is to watch people taking a cheeky peek at themselves in the shop windows as they walk on by.

Ever caught someone or been caught out your self?

To be or not to be

Hamlet asks the hard question

That is the question asked by many a cartoonist

Whether ’tis nobler in the work of drawing to suffer
The scratches and harshness of the HB pencil,
Or to take arms against a sea of troubles,
And, by opposing, end them by using the softness of the 2B ?
To HB, to scratch –  No more…
Choose 2B (and as Wham once said) Choose life!
Apologies Shakespeare, twas all in the name of good fun.

So, what’s it for you – 2B or HB?

Are you a stationary victim like myself and can’t walk past the callings of a new pencil, black felt tip pen or marker?
