Miss Universe Pageant found to be rigged

By Bill and Ben the little green alien men, Space and Aliens

A pageant wouldn’t be a pageant without a bit of controversy and gossip.

  • Miss USA Mary Leona Gage was disqualified in the 1957 finals as she was both married and a mother. Somehow, she had passed through unnoticed of her status all the way into the semi finals
  • In 2000 the Miss Australia entrant was chosen by a modelling agency to represent Australia (pageants had stopped as they were considered out of tune with the times). Although not against the rules, this was  frowned upon, as the intent is to have winners from in country competitions compete in the Miss Universe.  Ironically, the then chosen entrant, Jennifer Hawkins, went on to win the title in 2004.

Evil aliens

By Evil aliens, Space and Aliens

It was time for some new aliens – evil ones – dressed is hot pink with bright purple feathers and a cigarette hanging half out their mouth.

And did you know Jupiter is a giant gas planet? I used to think all planets were just giant rocks, some with water if you were lucky like earth.  Jupiter is made up predominantly of hydrogen (about 90%) and helium (9%) with a few sprinklings of some other elements.

And for those scientifically minded people out there, I know there are some errors in science within the making of this cartoon, but hey, that’s what’s great cartooning is all about – bending of the truth!

So, here’s the puzzle for the day. I can think of 2 obvious scientific errors – can you guess what they are? (I’ll post the answer, next time I post the adventures of these two new characters)

ON TV or IN the movies?

By Space and Aliens

You’ve got to love the peculiarities of the english language.  Why do you watch actors ON TV, but when you trek to a cinema, you watch them IN the movies?

It shall remain one of life’s many unanswered questions, until someone smarter than this humble engineer (perhaps an english teacher) can please explain!

It’s a neutrino vs photon war

By Space and Aliens

No sooner, do I post a cartoon on the amazing speed of Neutrinos, then things all change.

It looks like the Photons are fighting back, supporting Einstein and his theory on relativity and claiming the prize for being the fastest in the Universe.  CERN released a press statement in February indicating that a faulty cable may be the reason for the faster than light speed measurements taken from our little friends the Neutrinos. See the UK Daily Mail for a non  scientific explanation. (I decided not to link the official CERN site press release as it was a bit heavy reading, but possibly more technically precise).

Arriving before you leave – the life of a neutrino

By Space and Aliens

My thanks to Hugh for bringing me up to speed (bit of a pun and I didn’t even mean it) on the latest Hoo-ha going on in the land of particle physics.

Although this CERN experiment is still undergoing scrutiny, if found true it would shake up Einstein’s theory on general relativity (i.e., nothing travels faster than light). Here are a couple of articles related to the findings. Click me for CERN Press release and me for a ‘dummies’ explanation after an interview with CERN’s chief spokesman.
