Earworm partyMaybe you don’t have an Ohrwurm, perhaps you have beans stuck in your ears

You’re in for a real treat this week. I’m going to share with you the song ‘Bohnen in die Ohren’ (beans in the ears). My father used to play it incessantly at night time, while I was trying to go to sleep in my bedroom, which unfortunately shared one paper thin wall with the living room.

You absolutely must listen to this shortened rendition by Gus Backus to the very end (it only goes for 1:26 min). The lyrics are stupid at best; so stupid you gotta laugh.

A quick translation, so you get a better feel…

  • Yes, my mother says, Don’t poke any beans in your ears, beans in your ears, beans in your ears.
  • Yes, my mother says, Don’t poke any beans in your ears, beans in your ears.
  • Yes, you must speak louder, I have beans in my ears, beans in my ears, beans in my ears…
  • You can’t hear the teacher, with beans in your ears….

All this Ohrwurm talk reminded me of this song and I Googled it, not thinking I would actually find it. But surprise, surprise, there it was. I played it to my children, who thought it was so wonderful(ly annoying), they downloaded it from iTunes while my back was turned.

So, what do you think of the song? Feel sorry my my cruel upbringing?

That’s a catchy tune. Good thing it’s German thus ain’t no beans in my ears. 🙂 That song is so old. Bet the kids will torment you from now on with this song. HA! That is a cool graphic. I actually like worms, earthworms that is. I save them when they get lost and end on the sidewalk. Move them on the grassy area. Cheers to you, Marti and start wearing earplugs. 🙂

Hey Seeker, don’t you worry, ear plugs on standby. Earthworms, eh? Here in Australia we get giant earthworms which grow up to 1 metre long. You might need some heavy duty equipment to save one of these slippery sliders in the rain.

Now that is one funky looking worm. And an equally funky song. Unlike Seeker I do know German so the risk of beans in my ears, (as well as Ohrwurms) is extremely high!!

There is a story my mother used to tell, and though she passed away many years ago I think it’s ok to share because she shared it more than once…

Apparently there was a time when she was little… I don’t remember how old, but very young, definitely pre-school… and someone thought she smelled a little funny. The long and short of it was… apparently at some point she had snuck a pinto bean into her nose… and there it had remained. Lucky she had not done this trick with two, and odd that she had not noticed the smell herself.

So… beans in the nose was a thing to watch for with kids… moreso than beans in the ears!

What a wonderful story, with a good bean free ending for all. Maybe the beans were like hydrogen sulphide where you eventually don’t smell the gas.

Yeah… a good ending all around, except for the bean I suppose 😉 I don’t remember ever wanting to stick things into my ears or nose as a kid… and I don’t remember any stories about me either, so I must not have had that genetic trait!

  • It’s the first time I found out this blog. So great! I really enjoy your book
