Not sure how well known outside of Australia is the ‘budgie smuggler’. It was coined a long time back with the manufacturing of the Speedo bathers – tight fitting racing style men’s bathers. Some say it is an adaption of the English term ‘grape smugglers’. Either way, I think you’ll agree with me that budgie smugglers conjures a more humorous image.
Now that’s a ban I’ll go for. 🙂

Once again, funny and educational. I shouldn’t be surprised that Aussies came up with the clever term “budgie smugglers” since Speedo originated in Australia. And, I guess it is better than “banana hammock”!

I just learned it the other day watching an American reporter quoting an American swimmer, so maybe it originates from the USA.
I’m pretty sure it’s Australian in origin. After all, budgies are native to Australia. I found this article, by no other than an Australian newspaper (hence unbiased!) reflecting on the origins of the expression
