Lights! Camera!

Lights! Camera! Selfie!

It never ceases to amaze me what wonders technology can bring into our everyday lives to make life easier, yet at the same time, perhaps more absurd than ever before.

Let’s consider the snapping of the ever humble selfie. I mean, I thought it was simply a matter of extending one’s arm out so that you take on the appearance of a Romanesque sculpture and then trying to look normal whilst getting your thumb to click the ever elusive button to take the shot. But technology and our love of all things gadgety has enabled businesses to boom in a society that loves sharing images of themselves. Check out MacWorld’s 7 selfie enhancing products. Personally, I think you can’t go past the Joby GripTight GorillaPod Magnetic XL.  I think using it might be simpler than calling it by name.

So, what’s your selfie tool of choice?

Fear not, no judgement here. You’re in the safety of the world wide web.

Cell phone selfie

It’s a bit like the selfie stick for mobile phones

So, tell me… do you own a selfie stick? I do… I’ve never used it. It was one of those delightful gifts they sell at Mother’s day stalls in primary school. My daughter thought it was exactly what I needed. Back in my primary school days, I too was convinced of the delightful gifts on offer for mothers. It makes me wonder if my Mum loved all those tea towels I used to buy her. On reflection, she probably loved them as much as my Dad loved his handkerchief Father’s Day gifts.

So, what delightful presents have you given or received?

Double Selfie

Couples taking a selfieI love watching people take selfies, it’s a wonderful way to reflect on modern day human behaviour (if I had my time again, I think I would become a behavioural scientist). I’ve observed everything from the ‘make me smirk’, to out right strange. Whatever the selfie scene, many make great sources of cartoon content.

Have you seen a memorable selfie moment recently? Do share and we’ll keep it a secret just between you, me and the internet.

The selfie regret story

By That's life

Marie Antoinette's selfie regretWell, I’m a bit surprised and bit not – ‘Selfie’ originates from Australia!

According to the Oxford dictionary, which has now put its definition onto their online website (“A photograph that one has taken of oneself, typically one taken with a smartphone or webcam and uploaded to social media website”), the first documented version of a selfie appeared in an online ABC forum.

A drunk (must be Australian clue #1) wrote

“Um, drunk at a mates 21st, I tripped ofer [sic] and landed lip first (with front teeth coming a very close second) on a set of steps. I had a hole about 1cm long right through my bottom lip. And sorry about the focus, it was a selfie.”

The fact that it ends in ‘ie’ rather than ‘y’ is a second clue lending towards an Australian origin. Apparently we like to end words in ‘ie’ to make things more endearing and in this case, turning a possible narcassitic action into something cute and fun.

And final supporting argument, even our former Prime Minister Kevin Rudd helped to promote the expression, by sharing selfie pictures of himself while shmoozing the public.
